My dad took us for a family holiday as part of my mum’s birthday to Cairo. It was January 2000 and I was on my year end break in between Form 4 and Form 5. We flew to Cairo from Jeddah as my dad was working there at the time.
In the evening, we attended a laser show beside the sphinx. It was really cold that we had to rent blankets. We also ordered pizza and it was really nice to have it in the cold desert while watching the history show on the sphinx.
We never rode the camel in Jeddah, so, we decided to try it out in Cairo.
We even got the opportunity to explore the catacombs under the pyramids of Giza.
The pyramids were built roughly in 2500 BCE, and to think that I went through deep under a 4000 plus year old structure still boggles me. It was a somewhat steep descent to the subterranean chamber where the mummies were originally entombed.
We visited the Cairo Museum where they showed us how papyrus paper was made by the early Egyptians.
We saw the mummied remains of Ramses the 2nd and it was truly fascinating to see how well it’s been preserved. The were remains of hair and some skin on the mummy. It was also interesting to note that Ramses was quite tall.
As part of the holiday, we had a short cruise on the Nile that had spectacular views of Cairo.
